About Donations
The Old Spanish Trail Association (OSTA) is a §501(c)(3), Internal Revenue Service non-profit organization: EIN # 84-1282611. OSTA’s operations are supported through membership dues, grants, and the generous donations of individuals and businesses. A donation at any level helps to fund a wide variety of OSTA efforts such as:
- Protecting resources, viewshed, and recreational opportunities of the Old Spanish National Historic Trail (OSNHT) in the face of threats such as urban development, extractive resource ventures, energy development, and unauthorized off-road vehicle use and damage.
- Installing markers and interpretive signs along the Trail.
- Planning for outdoor recreational opportunities along the Trail including hiking, bicycling, and equestrian use.
- Creating interpretive waysides and exhibits along the Trail and in museums and visitor centers.
- Developing interpretive and educational publications to help increase public knowledge of the Trail.
- Donations made to the General Fund are considered “unrestricted” and approved by the OSTA Board of Directors for a variety of uses.
- Donations made to specific funds are considered “restricted”. These funds may only be used for the stated purpose.
General Fund – Unrestricted
Donations to this unrestricted General Fund are greatly appreciated and help to provide support for the promotion of OSTA, the Trail; publications, website management, social media communications; Trail planning; Trail signage; historical, archeological, and other research efforts; Trail stewardship advocacy; interpretive media development (exhibits, waysides, films, photos, publications); youth internships; event support; and general OSTA administration. The Pat Kuhlhoff Education Fund – Restricted
This restricted fund has been established in honor of long-term OSTA member and leader Pat Kuhlhoff of New Mexico for her unabated and committed efforts toward expanding youth and young adult education related to the Old Spanish Trail. The Executive Board will accept proposals and applications that may include projects to:
- develop public school educational curricula related to the Old Spanish Trail;
- develop educational publications and digital applications for use in school settings;
- develop educational “traveling trunks” for loan to schools in teaching the history of the Trail;
- support college and university research through grants and scholarships;
- support college and university student internships for focused support of OSTA projects.

Interpretive Media Fund – Restricted
This fund may be used for a wide array of interpretive/informational media on the Trail, its history, its resources, and its recreational and touring opportunities. This fund was originally established to create guidebooks for the OSNHT (such as the Utah/Arizona driving guide completed in 2015). Interpretive Media Funds may also be used for interpretive wayside, exhibit, film, and digital media projects. Old Spanish Trail Association EIN: 84-1282611.
Southern Utah University – Sherratt Library – Restricted
In 2015, Southern Utah University (SUU), Gerald R. Sherratt Library established a publicly accessible OSTA special collection through the generous donations of OSTA members. SUU is a tax-exempt organization located in Cedar City, Utah, EIN 876000481. OSTA encourages support and use of the special collection.
This restricted fund will be used to help support expenses related to the administration and transfer of materials to the Library, such as, books, photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia. Materials donated to SUU’s Sherratt Library become property of the University under terms specified in individual member deeds of gift. Terms governing individual gifts are negotiated prior to a gift being deeded by the donor or accepted by the University.
